SEO Strategies

Link Building

There are many different approaches to link building and different online marketing companies employ different techniques but all are trying to achieve the same goals. The primary goal of all link building is to raise the profile of the website involved and the company behind that website.

Every time a link is established to the site the chances of that website being found increase and if you can establish links on high profile pages then, even better. The other advantage of establishing links on high profile pages is the PageRank which flows from that page to yours. This in turn improves your rankings in the search engines.

Pay Per Click (PPC)

Pay Per Click is the practice of paying for traffic and clickthroughs from a third party. The clicks that the site pays for are intended to be “targeted”. This means that the potential customer has already expressed an interest in a similar service or product, whether this is from a search engine results page or from a similar industry website.

The market leader in PPC provision is Google. Their Adwords programme earns the company millions of dollars a year. There are equivalents on the other big search engines as well. Yahoo has Overture and MSN has AdCenter.

Affiliate Marketing

Slightly different to Pay Per Click marketing is Affiliate Marketing. Affiliate marketing is site based marketing where companies form relationships with other (often related) companies to create mutual benefits, whether this is in the form of sales or payment for referrals from one company to the other.

Companies often form affiliate networks with similar minded companies, to everyone’s benefit. This may take the form of obvious affiliations like banner ads on each others sites or more subtle techniques such as product reviews.

Social Media Optimisation (SMO)

Social media is a relatively new arm to the online world. In its infancy, socialising on the web consisted merely of message boards where internet savvy individuals would discuss anything from Star Wars to politics. In today’s world of Web 2.0 social media forms the largest part of the online world. At the turn of Web 2.0 social media sites were merely chat rooms or forums where members could chat in text format. Social media now includes the sharing of video, audio, photo, hobbies and knowledge.

Clever internet marketers have realised that there is a wealth of opportunity out there for them to use social media to advertise their products and services.

Articles and Press Releases

An excellent way for webmasters to draw attention to their site is by writing interesting, industry relevant articles and stories. These can then be sent to all the relevant industry parties in a number of different ways. There are a multitude of article submission sites and press release distributors that can spread your article or news throughout the online community. The key to making that news or article a success is the quality of the information that you’re offering the public.

Content Building

The fundamental of a successful website is decent content. If you fill your site with good information, resources and offer your visitor plenty of goodies then the site will sell itself, convert visitors to customers itself, generate in bound links itself and increase its own online profile.

When building your site content you need to think about all manner of aspects to make that content a success. These include presentation, site navigation, layout, colour and dynamics. Remember “content is king”!
