Organic Website Listings
When looking to get the most from a website it is important to work on your organic website listings on the search engines results pages (SERP’s).
What are Organic Website Listings?
There are two types of listings in the search engines, there is organic and paid (sometimes known as Pay per Click). Organic listings are there on merit and the owner of the site has not paid to get the web pages of his/her site where they sit in the results pages.
Organic listings is where you want your pages of your website as they are free but more importantly only 30% of people will ever click on them. So in simple terms you have a better chance of getting more traffic form an organic listing than PPC.
So now you understand what organic website listings are you need to understand how to get them for your website. Let’s look into detail on how this can be possible with a few tweaks to your site.
So what can you do as a webmaster to get the site to work?
The most obvious is the Meta data, not as important anymore but still worth looking at as will help get a page higher up the listings than before tweaking. Ok we all know that keywords are pretty much overlooked nowadays but the title and description if written well will help you with your websites organic listings.
Let’s look at the Meta title:
When writing a title it is important to have a main keyword phrase for the page and it is essential to have that keyword as close to the beginning of the title as possible. Also it should be as close to 50% of the full title as possible.
Meta Description:
The description again is like the Meta title, it should contain the main keyword phrase as close to the beginning as possible. Remember the description should be no more than around 125 characters. The reason for this is quite simple, Google & other search engines sometimes not always; display your description as the description in their SERP’s (search engine results pages). Anymore would be not use & is pointless.
Content:
When writing content for organic website listings, it is important to write semantically as you can. What’s semantics I hear you say?
It’s quite easy to explain, use different expressions and wording that means the same thing. E.g. search engine optimisation, website optimisation and SEO all mean the same thing. Try to add several variants of the main keyword phrase so when Google or one of the other search engines reads your content it understands what the page is about and understands the focus of the page. Content is king, writing it takes some practice but the more you do the better you will get at it.
Make each page have a minimum 250 words of text. More would be better if it’s of good quality. There is no maximum page size but I would suggest that it’s a maximum of 700 words.
Within the content if there is any keywords that another page discusses it may be an idea to make the keyword phase a link to that page. This helps with getting the whole site indexed.
